George Havakis is the Managing Director of GISSA International, a specialist boutique businesses whose focus is on Information Management and Standards Development. Commencing his businesses in 1990, George has accumulated over 38 years’ experience including 26 years direct experience in the Geospatial Industry acting as a consultant/adviser to government and business.
George’s involvement in the spatial information industry extends to participation in the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) a peak industry body for the private sector. As the former Chair for the Victorian branch, George was in that role for 10 years and he also sat on the National Board, completing 2 three year terms. George's role as Chairman of the chapter included liaison with the state government of Victoria on matters related to Spatial Information.
George also represents SIBA on the Standards Australia Committee ISO/TC 211 Geographic information/Geomatics and is also a member of the Standards Australia Committee reviewing the Sub Surface Utility Standard AS5488-2013.
From a Geospatial and Asset management perspective, he has created a Community of Knowledge called A-SPEC formed from councils and authorities. George is the Founder and Coordinator of the Community. Commenced as a concept in 2002 and launched in 2004 it has evolved into a consortium of 60+ Local Authorities across Australia who participate in the use and ongoing development of the A-SPEC standard specifications.
Outside of work George’s passion for sport has taken him across the world through his involvement as the assistant coach for the Australian Men’s Basketball Team for players with an Intellectual Disability. A role he held for 17 years. The team is currently ranked 3rd in the world.
